One of our areas of expertise here at Cary Products is in our ability to design and build custom injection mold tooling right here in our facility. The tool design and building process for injection molding is often complex and meticulous–and important. Good tooling helps prevent surface burrs, unwanted seams, and reduces waste material–all of which streamlines the injection molding process and reduces production costs. In other words, a good tool will ensure that we can make good parts.
Considerations for Injection Mold Tooling
There are a lot of different factors that go into the tooling design, from the materials that will be used to build the tools to the actual dimensions and design of the tool itself.
- Thermoplastic Properties: One of the most important things that we have to consider when building a tool is the actual plastic that will be molded with that tool. Some thermoplastics can be either particularly difficult to work with or more abrasive, which then affects what material goes into the tooling–and what particular features its design will have to contain.
- Thermoplastic Part Design: The design of the part itself will always have the most bearing on the design of the tool. Depending on the size, wall thickness, and tolerances that the part design requires, certain tooling materials might be needed to achieve the desired part.
- Special Tooling: For some part designs, certain specialized tooling might be needed, such as threading, slides, and lifters.
Other factors that we have to keep in mind are where the gate and vent locations are to ensure even cooling during the process, and what injection pressure is needed to fill the entire cavity of the tool.
