News & Insights on Custom Injection Mold Solutions

Custom Automotive Plastic Solutions

One of the several different markets that Cary Products serves is Automotive manufacturing. We have supported this industry for well over seventy years, providing full-service custom automotive plastic injection molding solutions to our partners. We walk with them from design and prototyping all the way to production, drawing on our experience in the industry to assist our partners in making each design perfect.

Taking a unique approach to product development

We have a standard stage gate product development process for each project that comes our way. This process is organized in stages and gates, each aimed at verifying that the outputs of each step have met the customer input requirements. This guides the project from the proposal to prototype and pilot phases, and ultimately up through production.

The importance of design

The design of a part plays a vital role in our process, determining all of the subsequent steps to be taken–materials sourced, operations enacted, secondary processing, and more. Our role in the design phase is to examine the customer’s proposal and find ways to improve its manufacturability and production costs.

The application environment that the part will operate in has a large impact on its design. ‘Under hood’ components for example, require heat deflection under load in order to endure the high temperatures generated when the vehicle is in operation. Temperature fluctuations are just one aspect–mechanical strength and product longevity are important factors we have to consider as well.

In addition, if the customer is looking to convert a metal part design to plastic, we have to ensure that this will be feasible. Other information we gather includes cyclical loading and the space available to increase the cross sectional area of the part, as well as the resins that our customers might be considering.

Once we have all of this information, including the resin, we can determine the approximate plastic part cost–which is especially important if this project is attempting to shift a metal part into a plastic part.

Product design is important for us. The design is where we work together with our customer to fix as many challenges as possible before they happen, find ways to reduce production costs, and determine the conditions and standards the part will have to meet. It’s through our attention to detail that we are able to provide quality custom automotive plastic injection molding services.
